Akashi Kaikyo Bridge Tours 2026: Walking and Tower Experience

1. Introduction: Overview of the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge

When people think of Kobe’s iconic landmarks, Mount Rokko and the port usually come to mind. However, stretching across the water to the west is one of the greatest engineering achievements in human history: the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge.

Before diving into the incredible seasonal events hosted here, we should clear up a common geographical misunderstanding. Despite its name containing “Akashi,” the bridge does not actually touch Akashi City. Instead, it spans the Akashi Strait to connect Tarumi Ward in western Kobe with Awaji Island.

There is a famous historical anecdote about its construction that perfectly shows the resilience of this structure. In 1995, while the bridge was still being built, the region was struck by the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake. The epicentre was incredibly close to the construction site. While the unfinished towers survived without major structural damage, the shift in the earth actually moved the foundations apart. As a result, the total length of the completed bridge ended up being exactly one metre longer than originally planned.

Today, this engineering marvel is a beautiful part of our daily landscape. When night falls, the entire structure lights up with thousands of changing colours. It is so massive and bright that you can easily see it shining across the water even from the eastern parts of Kobe City.

2. Event 1: The Akashi Kaikyo Bridge Sea Walk & Excursion Tours

Under normal circumstances, the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge is an expressway meant strictly for vehicles. Walking across it is impossible on a regular day. This is why the annual “Sea Walk” events are so fascinating for both locals and visitors.

When you travel across the bridge by car, the scenery flashes past incredibly quickly. The speed limit means you often miss the perfect shutter opportunities, and you cannot fully take in the sheer scale of the sea below. By participating in the Sea Walk, you get to step out onto the maintenance paths normally closed to the public. Walking at your own pace allows you to truly capture the spectacular views of the strait and hold the experience in your own hands.

This walking event actually shares a spiritual connection with the bridge’s opening in 1998. To celebrate its completion, a special commemorative event was organised where the public could walk along the actual road deck. Joining the Sea Walk today offers a very similar, nostalgic sense of wonder—standing on a structure that was built to conquer the deep waters.

3. Event 2: Akashi Kaikyo Bridge World 2026 (Tower Top Experience)

For those who want to take their experience to an entirely different level, the “Akashi Kaikyo Bridge World” tour has officially opened its applications for the 2026 season. This tour takes you up inside the massive steel towers to the very top.

Kobe has plenty of famous observation decks along the Rokko mountain range, but looking at the city from the ocean side at this altitude is an entirely different, breathtaking experience. Standing at the top of the tower puts you nearly 300 metres above the sea level—a height comparable to the main observation deck of Tokyo Tower. From this vantage point, you can look back at Kobe and see how the urban streets cling tightly to the narrow strip of land between the sea and the mountains.

A few years ago, the football players from our local club, Vissel Kobe, actually climbed this exact tower for a special feature on their YouTube channel. Watching professional athletes look genuinely amazed by the height really puts the scale of the bridge into perspective.

Looking at the video gives you a taste of the scale, but nothing compares to feeling the sea breeze against your face at 300 metres in the air.

4. A Local’s View: The Freedom and Presence at Maiko Park

Even if you do not climb to the top of the towers, the area surrounding the base of the bridge on the Kobe side is a wonderful place to spend an afternoon. This coastal area is known as Maiko Park (Maiko Koen).

As a local, I highly recommend spending some quiet time here. Standing on the grass at Maiko Park gives you a fascinating contrast of sensations. If you look out towards the horizon, you feel an incredible sense of openness and freedom from the vast ocean. But if you turn your head slightly upwards, you are met with the overwhelming, heavy presence of the concrete and steel framework arching over you. It is a unique spot where raw nature and heavy human infrastructure meet in perfect harmony.

5. Conclusion: A High-Satisfaction Experience Worth Checking

For most people, the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge is either a beautiful shape on the horizon or a road they drive across to visit Awaji Island or Shikoku. Even just driving across it is an exciting experience that makes your heart race a little. However, these special guided tours give you a rare chance to experience the bridge, the sea, and the city with your own physical body.

These events are not heavily publicised to mass international audiences, making them somewhat of a hidden gem. Because of the limited spaces, they require a bit of planning and you must keep an eye out for the annual application deadlines. However, the level of personal satisfaction you get from standing in the middle of the strait is absolutely incredible.

If you are planning your travels around Kobe in 2026, make sure to check the booking schedules early. It is an unforgettable way to experience the true scale of Japan’s infrastructure up close.
